Cinema advertising combines a large-screen environment with measurable national reach, concentrated audience attention and highly specific delivery rules. In 2024, National CineMedia’s U.S. network included 18,028 screens across 1,408 theaters, while UK cinemas recorded 126.5 million admissions. The figures below separate network measurements, audience studies, revenue results, admissions context and policy requirements.

U.S. network scale and reach
National CineMedia (NCM) reported 18,028 screens in 1,408 theaters at its December 26, 2024 fiscal year-end. The network covered 47 U.S. states plus the District of Columbia and included 196 designated market areas (DMAs). It reached every top-25, top-50 and top-100 U.S. DMA, making its footprint especially relevant for campaigns that need broad market coverage.
The network’s scale also included theaters operated by ESA parties. Those theaters accounted for 9,455 of the 18,028 screens and 688 of the 1,408 theaters in 2024. More than 390 million people attended theaters in the NCM network during the year.
NCM reported the following share of attendance in theaters presenting cinema advertising:
| U.S. DMA group | NCM attendance share in 2024 |
|---|---|
| Top 10 DMAs | 67.6% |
| Top 25 DMAs | 62.9% |
| Top 50 DMAs | 60.2% |
| All U.S. DMAs nationally | 54.5% |
These are NCM network measures, not a census of every U.S. cinema advertiser. They describe the network’s reported attendance position within theaters presenting cinema advertising, with the measurement period ending in fiscal 2024. The source is NCM’s Combined Annual Report 2024.
Audience demographics and attention
NCM’s 2023 audience study described a relatively young and economically strong moviegoing audience. People aged 12–34 represented 62.0% of NCM LLC audiences, and the median moviegoer age was 30. Household income was above $100,000 for 47.5% of NCM moviegoers, compared with 41.0% of the U.S. general population in the comparison used by NCM. The median household income of NCM moviegoers was $92,000, and 39.0% had a bachelor’s degree or higher.
Attention results in the same reported research set were notably channel-specific. A 2023 Lumen study found cinema advertising attention was 2–3 times that of linear live sports, Fast Nets, top-tier ad-supported video on demand and premium audio podcasts. The study found cinema ad attention was 7–16 times that of social media and digital platforms. These are comparative study results, so they should be interpreted as findings from the named study rather than as a universal ranking for every campaign.
NCM also reported results averaged across seven years of research covering 323 advertisers. Big-screen advertising generated a 62.0% awareness lift and a 24.0% consideration lift across that research. The averaging period and advertiser count matter: these figures summarize multiple studies reported in 2024 and are not the result of one single campaign.
One separate eWorks intercept study illustrates the difference between an aggregate research average and a campaign-specific result. For one Platinum Spot advertiser, the study reported 88.0% brand recall, a 100.0% lift in unaided awareness, a 21.0% lift in favorable opinion and a 19.0% lift in future consideration. Those lifts apply to that named study and advertiser, not to cinema advertising generally. The demographic, attention and campaign-study figures are reported in NCM’s Combined Annual Report 2024.
Revenue and inventory performance
NCM LLC reported $240.8 million in total revenue for fiscal 2024, compared with $259.8 million in fiscal 2023. The 2023 total was 7.3% above the 2024 figure. Within 2024 advertising revenue, national clients supplied 78.1%, while regional and local advertisers supplied 16.2%. Lobby Entertainment Network and lobby promotions represented approximately 0.5% of total advertising revenue.
The main reported revenue categories were:
| Revenue category | 2023 | 2024 | Reported change |
|---|---|---|---|
| National advertising | $190.1m | $188.0m | -1.1% |
| Local and regional advertising | $51.1m | $39.1m | -23.5% |
| ESA-party beverage advertising | $18.6m | $13.7m | -26.3% |
NCM reported an 11.0% decrease in network theater attendance, from 438.9 million in 2023 to 390.7 million in 2024. At the same time, national advertising utilization increased 10.2% in 2024 compared with 2023. This combination shows why attendance and inventory utilization should be tracked separately: a lower attendance figure does not by itself describe how much available national advertising inventory was sold.
The physical network also changed modestly. Total network screens decreased 2.0%, from 18,403 in 2023 to 18,028 in 2024. ESA-party screens decreased 1.2%, from 9,573 to 9,455. NCM reported adjusted OIBDA of $45.7 million and an adjusted OIBDA margin of 19.0% in 2024. These fiscal results use the December 26, 2024 year-end and come from NCM’s Combined Annual Report 2024.
Buying, delivery and measurement
NCM reported an average of 12.8 screens per theater in 2024. Aggregate annual attendance per screen in NCM network theaters was 21,674. Together, those figures provide operational context for the network’s theater-and-screen inventory, although they do not replace campaign-level delivery reporting.
The Noovie Show created a defined beverage advertising placement. Up to 90 seconds could be sold to ESA parties for beverage advertising in 2024. Under the reported beverage agreements, Cinemark purchased 60 seconds and AMC purchased 30 seconds. NCM’s filing separately described the same 60-second Cinemark and 30-second AMC purchases, so these are agreement-specific time allocations rather than a general rule for every cinema campaign.
Speed of delivery was another operational feature. Advertisers could generally run Noovie Show ads less than 72 hours after a proposal closed. For buyers, that timing can matter when a campaign is tied to a launch window, but the statistic describes general availability in NCM’s 2024 filing description rather than a guarantee for every booking.
The network, audience and delivery statistics in this section are reported in NCM’s Combined Annual Report 2024. They are most useful when paired with the relevant campaign’s booked screens, dates, audience definition and measurement method.
UK audience and box-office context
UK cinema admissions reached 126.5 million in 2024. The UK Cinema Association reported 123.6 million admissions in 2023, compared with 117.3 million in 2022. Even after the recovery from 2022, 2024 admissions remained 28.2% below the 2019 level of 176.1 million. These are audience-supply figures for the cinema market, not cinema advertising spend.
The UK Cinema Association’s annual admissions figures provide the admissions context. For a second view of the market, the BFI’s official 2023 statistics reported £985.8 million in UK and Republic of Ireland box office across 822 films. The 20 highest-grossing films generated £588.6 million, or 61% of that total.
Seasonality and film concentration were visible in the 2023 figures. UK admissions reached 17.6 million in July and 14.6 million in August, compared with a monthly average of 10.3 million. Barbie generated £95.6 million and 10% of total UK and Republic of Ireland box office in 2023. For independent UK films, the top 20 generated £33.7 million and 89% of the total box office for all independent UK films. Independent UK films accounted for 3.8% of total UK box office, equal to £37.4 million.
These results indicate why a cinema advertising plan may need to distinguish national annual reach from individual release calendars. Admissions are not evenly distributed across months or films, and box-office concentration is not the same measure as advertising delivery.
Restrictions and reel standards
UK cinema advertising is subject to audience-profile and reel requirements. Under the Cinema Advertising Association’s voluntary measure, effective October 1, 2025, HFSS brands were limited to 40% of any UK cinema advertising reel. The CAA also stated that cinema preshow had been capped at 11 minutes for more than a decade. The cap concerns the preshow environment; it should not be treated as a measure of campaign reach or audience attention.
The CAA’s current policy page, accessed in 2026, states that UK HFSS products may only be advertised with feature films whose national audience profile is no more than 25% under-16s. In the Republic of Ireland, HFSS products may only be advertised with films whose national audience profile is no more than 50% under-15s.
Other audience thresholds also apply. Cinema e-cigarette advertisements may not accompany films whose national audience profile exceeds 25% under-18s. In Great Britain, gambling advertisements must not accompany films whose national audience profile exceeds 25% under-18s. Campaign planning therefore needs the relevant territory, product category and film audience profile before a reel can be assessed.
The reel cap is documented in the CAA’s HFSS advertising announcement, while the audience-profile rules are listed in the CAA policies. The HFSS cap is effective from October 1, 2025; the other policy facts reflect the CAA rules accessed in 2026.
