Bev Oster with Oster and Associates, reports she will be “talking the walk” over the next three weeks in Colima, Mexico, for a Spanish-language emersion program. The program is being offered through one of her clients, Organics Unlimited and Project Amigo. Organics Unlimited is a San Diego-based distributor of organic produce which provides education and funding through its' GROW Fund (Giving Resources and Opportunities to Workers). Funds are raised through a surcharge on all GROW organic bananas sold through Organics Unlimited, which is dedicated to improving the lives of farm workers and their families in Mexico and Ecuador. Cox Cable’s Channel 4 San Diego was the local leader in the recent Pacific Southwest Emmy Awards. The cable station won awards in 10 categories, including magazine program, military program and best live sports event. Other local winners included XETV/Channel 6, which won in nine categories, including best San Diego weekend newscast and best San Diego evening newscast. A best San Diego evening newscast award also went to KGTV/Channel 10, which won Emmys in a total of four categories. Local NBC outlet KNSD/Channel 39, Cable 7 also won awards in four categories, including news writing and editing. Local Fox outlet KSWB/Channel 5 was recognized in two categories, as were KPBS/Channel 15, Cable 11 and Telemundo station XHAS. Univision outlet KBNT won an Emmy in one category, as did KFMB/Channel 8 and KUSI/Channel 51, Cable 9. The awards recognized achievements by stations in the Pacific Southwest, which includes Las Vegas, Palm Springs and Bakersfield.

Jeff Barnes is the new editor of the Mission Times Courier, succeeding Sally Ortega Madaffer, who retired from the paper after more than 15 years serving as editor and co-publisher. Barnes grew up in Fletcher Hills and attended Fletcher Hills Elementary, Parkway Middle and Grossmont High schools. He graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. He previously worked at NBC 7/39.

KUSI-NEWS has announced it will join the Grossmont Healthcare District, Sharp Grossmont Hospital, Rady Children’s Hospital and the City of La Mesa as a sponsor of the ninth annual Kids Care Fest, a free event featuring free health care screenings for children under age 12, to be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, at Briercrest Park, 9001 Wakarusa St., La Mesa. The public is invited to attend. Organizers expect more than 1,000 children under age 12, including many from low-income and under-insured families, will attend to receive free, potentially life-saving, health care screenings, including hearing and vision screenings, from healthcare professionals at the event. Additional free health screenings are expected to include dental, podiatrist and chiropractic, as well as scoliosis spinal exams. Free medical information also is planned to be available from pediatricians, dermatologists and pharmacists at more than 50 exhibit booths representing non-profit organizations.
